Brazil’s Justice System Clears Path for X’s Return

On Tuesday, the Brazilian Supreme Court took a significant step in reinstating the social media platform X by ordering its telecommunications agency, Anatel, to lift the block within 24 hours. Justice Alexandre de Moraes emphasized that X has met all requirements for resuming its services in Brazil.

What Led to the Ban?

Before the Supreme Court’s ruling, X had found itself in troubled waters. In August, the platform capitulated to various court decisions that sought to block accounts popular within Brazil. Notably, this led X to withdraw its legal representation in the country, which escalated to a nationwide ban imposed by Justice de Moraes on August 30th. Telecommunications were given a tight five-day window to enact the ban across Brazil.

Steps for Reinstatement

While the court has ordered Anatel to remove restrictions on X, it does not guarantee an immediate return to the app. Anatel must notify around 20,000 internet service providers across Brazil, and the process may take varying amounts of time depending on the systems each provider uses.

X’s Response to the Ruling

X’s Global Government Affairs team responded to the news with optimism, stating, “X is proud to return to Brazil. We believe in granting tens of millions of Brazilians access to our indispensable platform.
