The Framework Laptop 16 has just undergone a significant upgrade, further cementing its reputation as the most ambitious laptop on the market. Starting today, users can enhance their devices for just $39 by adding two extra M.2 slots with the new Dual M.2 Adapter.

What is the Dual M.2 Adapter?

This new modular component is the first since the launch of the Framework Laptop 16 and utilizes the expansive bay located at the back of the device. Previously, users only had two options upon launch: a Radeon RX 7700S discrete graphics card or an empty bay that contained fans. Now, by adding the Dual M.2 Adapter, users can install an additional pair of M.2 modules, allowing for increased storage and functionality.

Maximize Your Storage Capacity

The Dual M.2 Adapter can support M.2 2280, 2260, 2240, or 2230 modules, each featuring four lanes of PCIe 4.0. This is in addition to the existing SSD slots (M.2 2280 and M.2 2230) that come pre-installed in the laptop.

Currently, SSD capacities can reach up to 8TB for M.2 2280 modules and 2TB for M.2 2230 modules. This configuration allows users to theoretically house a staggering 26TB of storage in their Framework Laptop 16, excluding additional storage options like Framework's Expansion Cards or full-size SD card modules.

With the release of 2TB SD cards, the overall maximum storage capacity of the Framework Laptop 16 can now soar to an impressive 38TB. However, users with the Radeon discrete GPU will need to swap out their module to utilize the new adapter, but this process is designed to be quick and straightforward.

Cooling Enhancements for Better Performance

Alongside the introduction of the Dual M.2 Adapter, Framework has improved the liquid metal cooling system. The company has switched to Honeywell PTM7958 thermal paste to enhance overheating issues and performance degradation over time. This change addresses user concerns about high temperatures and disruptive fan noise experienced during testing.
