General Motors Reaches Milestone with 2,000th EV Charging Stall Installation
General Motors (GM), in partnership with EV charging company EVgo, proudly announced the successful installation of their 2,000th public EV charging stall in Murrieta, California. This achievement marks a significant step in GM's ambitious plans to enhance electric vehicle (EV) charging accessibility across the United States.
Meeting the Charging Deadline
With this installation, GM has fulfilled a deadline it set in September to establish a majority of its projected 2,850 DC fast-charging stalls by the end of this year. The newly opened charging station, strategically located near Interstate 215 in Riverside County, features five 350kW fast chargers capable of servicing up to 10 EVs simultaneously.
Types of Chargers: CCS and NACS
While GM has not specified whether the installed chargers are exclusively CCS (Combined Charging System) or if they also support Tesla's NACS (North American Charging Standard) ports, the latter has gained prominence as the prevalent standard over the past year and a half. We have reached out to GM for further clarification regarding this matter and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
Collaboration with EVgo and Expanding Charging Networks
EVgo's president, Dennis Kish, emphasized the importance of their collaboration with GM, stating that it has enabled the company to facilitate public charging across communities in over 30 states within the U.S. Furthermore, EVgo is dedicated to rolling out its "first flagship destinations" next year, signifying a progressive stride in providing efficient charging solutions.
Future Plans for Charging Infrastructure
Back in September, GM announced its strategy to establish a new network distinct from a separate initiative that plans to install another 2,000 DC fast chargers at Flying J and Pilot truck stops. This new network will feature 400 flagship-style gas station charging locations designed to serve major metropolitan areas in states including Florida, California, Texas, and Michigan.
Collaboration with Other Car Companies
In addition to its initiatives with EVgo, GM is also part of another EV charging consortium named Ionna, which includes leading car manufacturers such as Hyundai, Kia, BMW, and Stellantis. This collaboration signifies GM's commitment to fostering a more extensive and reliable EV charging ecosystem.
Conclusion
The installation of the 2,000th charging stall indicates GM’s formidable push towards broadening EV infrastructure, thereby supporting the growth of electric vehicle adoption in the U.S. As companies like GM and EVgo enhance public charging networks, EV drivers can look forward to increased convenience and reliability when charging their vehicles.
