Integrating AI with Monday.com: Building a Debug Assistant

In today's fast-paced tech environment, debugging code can be a tedious and frustrating task for developers. However, by leveraging tools like Monday.com and AI capabilities, we can simplify this process significantly. In this article, we will guide you through creating a Next.js app that integrates with Monday.com’s Incoming Bugs board, automatically suggesting fixes for bugs based on their descriptions.

What is Monday.com?

Monday.com is a powerful work management platform accessible on both web and mobile. It enables teams and organizations to streamline their operations by tracking projects and workflows, enhancing data visualization, and facilitating team collaboration. It features automation capabilities and integrates seamlessly with various third-party applications.

Setting Up Your Monday.com App

To get started, you will need a Monday.com developer account. If you do not have one, create an account and then:

  1. Log in to your Monday.com dashboard.
  2. Click on the blue button on the left panel to add a new item to your workspace.
  3. Select Choose from template and choose the Product Development template.
  4. After the template is added, navigate to Incoming Bugs and add a new column titled Suggestions.

Your workspace will be set up and ready to connect with your application.

Installation Process

We will utilize a Next.js app template provided by Monday.com, which offers pre-built React components. Follow these steps to get started:

  1. Clone the template repository and install the necessary dependencies.
  2. Open your .env file and input your OPENAI_API_KEY.
  3. Start your development server.
  4. To connect this app to Monday.com, install ngrok and sign up for an account (available at ngrok.com).

Run the command provided by ngrok to expose your local server via a public URL. Save this URL for the next steps.

Connecting the App to Monday.com

Go back to your Monday.com developer app and configure a new feature:

  1. Select Dashboard Widgets and choose Start from scratch.
  2. Name your feature Debug Widget and paste your ngrok URL in the Widget Setup tab.

Make sure to publish your app by navigating to the app's dashboard and clicking on App Versions.

Developing the Debug Assistant App

Now that your app is connected, let’s write the essential code for our Debug Assistant:

  1. Open the original boilerplate file, copy its contents into a new file named debug-assistant.tsx.
  2. Adjust the component function name accordingly.
  3. Add the required Dropdown components for board and column selection.
  4. Implement the handleSend() function to send prompts to OpenAI and update the selected column in Monday.com.

Be aware of known bugs when utilizing Next.js. You may need to adjust the route.ts file to bypass authentication during development.

Testing Your Application

With your app set up and the Debug Widget visible in your workspace, it's time to test:

  1. Input the bug description you wish to analyze.
  2. Send the request to see the Suggestions column populated with AI-generated fixes.

This integration uses the GPT-3.5 model by default, but you can switch to GPT-4 for enhanced capabilities by altering the model name in your service file.

Final Thoughts

You've successfully built a Monday.com app capable of providing debugging assistance via AI. Feel free to customize the UI, refine the functionality and consider the next steps for deployment on a production server. Your willingness to optimize workflows using modern tools is vital for today's innovative projects!
