SuperAGI Tutorial: Generate a Codebase & Push to GitHub

A developer using SuperAGI to generate code and push to GitHub.

What is SuperAGI?

SuperAGI is an open-source framework that allows developers to build, manage, and run useful autonomous AI agents quickly and reliably. With SuperAGI, you can create agents designed to perform various tasks, including coding, testing, and deploying applications. In this tutorial, we will explore how to utilize SuperAGI to generate a codebase and push it to GitHub using the Coding + Github Push Agent template.

Understanding Agents in SuperAGI

Agents in SuperAGI are advanced systems powered by Large Language Models (LLMs). These agents operate autonomously, carrying out tasks, making decisions, and interacting with various toolkits based on user-provided goals, instructions, resources, and constraints. The aim is to achieve the desired outcomes effectively.

What are Agent Templates?

An agent template is a predefined set of characteristics, behaviors, and capabilities used to create new agents swiftly. These templates are specifically designed to address various scenarios and come equipped with:

  • Agent Name: A unique identifier for each template.
  • Description: A brief overview detailing the agent's functionalities and intended use cases.
  • Goals: The primary objectives programmed for the agent.
  • Instructions: A set of operational guidelines or tasks for the agent to follow.
  • Tool: Tools or software the agent is designed to work with.
  • Agent Type: Type of Agent required for the template - Task Queue Agent, Dynamic Task Agent, or Fixed Action Agent.
  • Models: Specifies the model the agent is designed to work with.

Prerequisites

Before getting started, ensure you have the following:

  • A GitHub account. If you don't have one, you can sign up for free here.
  • Your GitHub Access Token with permissions to access and modify repositories. You can create this by following these steps:
    1. Go to Settings in your GitHub account.
    2. Click on Developer Settings.
    3. Select Personal access tokens, then click Tokens (classic).
    4. Click Generate new token, write a note about its purpose, and select an expiration date.
    5. Select appropriate scopes for the necessary permissions and click on Generate New Token.
    6. Copy the token and save it in the config.yaml file as GITHUB_ACCESS_TOKEN.
    7. Record your GitHub Username in the GITHUB_USERNAME field, found on your profile.
  • Ensure SuperAGI is installed on your machine. Follow the installation instructions here.
  • For this tutorial, we recommend using Python and VS Code, though any language and editor is suitable.

Creating an Agent Using SuperAGI

We'll utilize the Coding + GitHub Push Agent template in this tutorial. Follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to localhost:3000. You should see the main interface.
  2. Access the Marketplace and select the Coding + Github Push Agent template.
  3. Install the template.
  4. Create a new Agent and choose the Coding + Github Push Agent template.
  5. Configure the Agent with desired options or leave the defaults; ensure to include your GitHub repository link as your third goal.
  6. Click on Create and Run to initiate the process.
  7. Once started, the agent will generate the code and push it to GitHub. Grab a coffee while you wait for your agent to complete its work!

Behind the Scenes

The agent operates through a systematic process:

  1. The agent gathers input in the form of goals, representing desired outcomes.
  2. The goals are processed by the thinking tool, which formulates responses and action plans based on these goals.
  3. The thinking tool generates several outputs, including:
    • Thought: Insights or considerations derived from the goals.
    • Plan: A strategy outlining steps to achieve goals.
    • Criticism: Evaluations or constructive feedback related to the goals and generated plans.
    • Tool: Specific methods the agent can utilize to realize the goals.
  4. A specific tool is chosen among the outputs and executed.
  5. This execution represents one complete cycle, often referred to as an iteration, aligning tasks with original goals.

Conclusion

SuperAGI offers a robust framework for building autonomous AI agents that can efficiently manage various tasks. With the Coding + Github Push Agent template, developers can streamline the process of code generation and version control.*
