Microsoft Launches New Windows App Across Multiple Platforms
In an exciting move for users of various operating systems, Microsoft has officially launched a new Windows app today. This versatile application is accessible on macOS, iOS, iPadOS, web browsers, Android devices, and even Windows PCs, offering a unique solution for streaming Windows from multiple sources.
Unified Hub for Streaming Windows
The newly introduced Windows app acts as a dedicated hub for users to stream a copy of Windows from several source platforms, including:
- Windows 365
- Azure Virtual Desktop
- Remote Desktop
This app has gone through nearly a year of testing, ensuring that it meets user demands with essential features for improved functionality.
Key Features of the New Windows App
Among the highlights of the new app are:
- Customizable Homescreen: Users can personalize the homescreen to suit their workflows.
- Multi-Monitor Support: Enhances productivity by allowing users to connect multiple displays.
- USB Redirection: This feature allows the usage of local devices like webcams, storage units, and printers as if they were directly plugged into a cloud PC.
Target Audience
Currently, the app is designed primarily for Microsoft work and school accounts. It aims to facilitate existing users of Remote Desktop clients across different operating systems to transition seamlessly to this unified platform. While Microsoft has a history of offering similar remote connection solutions, such as the Remote Desktop Connection app included with Windows 11, this new app consolidates features into a single, accessible platform.
Cloud-Centric Future
It’s noteworthy that Microsoft has not indicated plans to extend support to consumer accounts for this new app. Last year, the company hinted at a long-term vision of fully transitioning Windows to the cloud, aiming to deliver enhanced AI-driven services and allow full roaming of users’ digital experiences.
Availability
The Windows app can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store for Windows users. Additionally, it is accessible via Apple’s App Store for users with macOS, iOS, and iPadOS devices. For Android users, public preview mode for the app commences today.
