Optimism for Crypto Regulation: A New Era Begins
In a recent interview with Coinage, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Commissioner Hester Peirce shared her optimistic views on the potential regulatory changes anticipated under the incoming SEC Chair Paul Atkins, nominated by President Trump. Peirce highlighted the possibility of revisiting significant crypto-related initiatives that had previously faced challenges during the tenure of outgoing Chair Gary Gensler.
Transitioning to a Pro-Crypto Leadership
Peirce pointed out that the SEC is currently undergoing a transitional phase. She expressed hope that Atkins' pro-crypto viewpoint would cultivate a more favorable regulatory landscape for cryptocurrency. "If it changes from a majority of Commissioners who don’t want things to go through to a majority who do, then yeah, it’s easier," Peirce stated. She further explained that Atkins, who will succeed Gensler on January 20, is expected to make crypto regulations a priority from his first day in office.
Revisiting Ethereum ETF Staking and In-Kind Redemptions
One of the key initiatives Peirce is optimistic about involves enabling Ethereum ETFs to participate in staking, as well as reconsidering the mechanisms for in-kind redemption of ETFs. She acknowledged that any changes would still require support from other commissioners who had previously resisted such reforms. However, the new leadership could shift the dynamics in favor of these approvals.
While uncertainties persist, Peirce suggested that initial steps toward these approvals could be initiated soon, in line with the broader optimism surrounding Atkins' leadership. His pro-crypto reputation has led to increased anticipation within the industry for a more supportive regulatory framework.
A New Era for Crypto Regulation
President Trump announced Atkins’ nomination on December 4, signaling a potential shift in U.S. crypto policies. Known for his favorable stance on digital assets, Atkins’ ascendancy has ignited enthusiasm among crypto advocates who see this as a prime opportunity to enhance innovation and adoption within the sector.
In summary, with Peirce’s hopeful outlook alongside the appointment of a pro-crypto Chair, the SEC is poised to take substantial steps towards advancing cryptocurrency regulation, potentially paving the way for the inclusivity of Ethereum ETFs and staking in the near future.
