Ethereum's EIP 7805: A Revolutionary Step Towards Censorship Resistance

The Censorship Challenge in Ethereum's Network

Ethereum (ETH), one of the leading blockchain platforms, is currently grappling with significant challenges related to transaction censorship. This issue is primarily due to the growing centralization of block production within the network.

Current State of Block Production

Recent reports indicate that two major block producers dominate a staggering 95% of Ethereum's block production. Such concentration of power raises serious concerns about potential censorship opportunities, especially in light of advanced Maximum Extractable Value (MEV) strategies. These strategies arise when certain network actors manipulate the Ethereum mempool to prioritize specific transactions over others, creating an unfair advantage.

Understanding Maximum Extractable Value (MEV)

Maximum Extractable Value refers to the potential profit that miners or block producers can extract through reordering, including, or excluding transactions within a block. This manipulation can jeopardize the fairness of transaction validation, as it allows certain actors to benefit disproportionately at the expense of others.

Introduction of EIP 7805

To counteract these challenges, Ethereum is set to implement an upgrade known as EIP 7805. This upgrade will introduce Fork-choice Enforced Inclusion Lists (FOCIL) which aim to enhance the blockchain's resistance to censorship significantly.

How EIP 7805 Works

Under EIP 7805, a selection of 16 validators will be assigned as "inclusion list committee members" for each block slot. These members will be responsible for creating inclusion lists that consist of transactions from the mempool that must be incorporated into the next block.

This mechanism is crucial as it aims to diminish the power that block builders have in manipulating transactions. Validators will only be eligible to validate blocks that include all transactions on these inclusion lists, which effectively invalidates blocks that do not follow this guideline.

Expected Impact on Censorship and Centralization

While EIP 7805 is a significant step towards mitigating the risks posed by centralization in block production, it is important to note that it will not entirely resolve the issues at hand. Nevertheless, it is expected to strengthen Ethereum’s defenses against censorship and enhance the overall inclusivity of the network.

The Vision of the Beam Chain

This upgrade is part of a more expansive vision for Ethereum’s future, spearheaded by Ethereum Foundation veteran Justin Drake. This initiative, known as the "Beam Chain," encompasses nine crucial updates to the technical architecture and transaction processing framework of Ethereum.

Final Thoughts

As Ethereum continues to evolve, the introduction of upgrades like EIP 7805 signifies a commitment to maintaining the network's decentralization and fairness. With the landscape of blockchain technology constantly changing, these advancements are essential to ensure Ethereum remains resilient and open for all users.
