Apple recently made headlines by announcing that some California residents will soon be able to integrate their driver's licenses and state IDs into Apple Wallet. This move is part of California’s pilot program for mobile driver’s licenses (mDL), with the rollout set for this fall.

What is the Mobile Driver’s License Pilot?

The pilot program will exclusively allow up to 1.5 million participants. It aims to streamline the security process at select terminals at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and San Francisco International Airport (SFO). Participants will not need to hand over their driver’s licenses or phones during TSA screening, making the travel experience more convenient.

How to Participate in the Pilot

• To enroll, users must scan their physical driver’s license or ID.
• Afterward, a photo of the user’s face must be uploaded.
• The ID will be usable for purchasing age-restricted products in designated retail locations in Sacramento.
• Participants can pass through airport security checkpoints using their mobile IDs.

Mobile IDs Available in Several States

In addition to California, mobile IDs are already accessible in states like Arizona, Maryland, Colorado, Georgia, and Ohio. New York launched its own mobile ID app in June for identity verification at airports. Other states like Delaware, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Missouri also have similar mobile ID programs.

Security Concerns Regarding Mobile IDs

While state-run mobile ID apps offer convenience, they have raised significant security concerns. The New York Civil Liberties Union and the Surveillance Resistance Lab previously urged New York's DMV to pause its mobile ID pilot, citing risks such as:

• Mobile driver’s licenses could serve as a pretext for police to seize phones during routine stops.
• They may impede individuals from recording police interactions.
• Potential tracking and information collection by third parties.

Apple's Stance on Privacy and Security

Apple has emphasized the security of its IDs stored in Apple Wallet, asserting that the information is inaccessible by any third parties, including Apple itself. According to a press release, the driver’s license information is securely stored on the user’s device and can only be accessed when the user chooses to present it. Notably, both Apple and state-issuing authorities do not track when or where a user presents their ID.
